What Is PR?

The Public Relations Society of America defines PR as:

“A strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.”

Then there’s Wikipedia’s definition…

“The practice of deliberately managing the release and spread of information between an individual or an organization (such as a business, government agency, or a non-profit organization) and the public in order to affect the public perception.”

Let me break it down even further…

At its core, public relations can help get your message, whatever it may be, NOTICED. Seen and heard. Recognized.

By shining a powerful mega-watt light on your business or organization, PR gives your brand exposure. It increases the collective awareness for your message, product, or service amongst your target audience in a positive way. PR propels your business forward and can bring you positive and lasting results.

How? It’s simple. PR is about influencing a credible entity to publicly say something good about you, your brand, products, and/or services. In short, PR is about making you look good through an objective third party.

Through a successful PR strategy, you can achieve THIRD PARTY CREDIBILITY. The sky's the limit on what a good PR strategy can do for your business.

When a neutral third party chooses to tell your story and shares your message with your target audience, you become credible, which establishes trust of your brand from the public.

Third party credibility can be achieved in various strategic ways, for example, through media relations, testimonials, word of mouth, publicized events, and more. The most effective and common way (and perhaps most sought-after) is through earned media.

Earned media or earned communication means you don’t pay for the exposure you receive (like you would with advertising), you EARN it, which gives you credibility.

How do you earn it? By identifying and reaching out to potential third parties and convincing them to tell the compelling story behind your brand.

A third party could be the media, your community members, the government, stakeholders, influencers, patients, clients, or customers, just to name a few.
